ESA-SCOPE

Programme: ESA

CNR Strategic Area: AP4

Project title: Satellite-based observations of Carbon in the Ocean: Pools, fluxes and Exchanges

Acronym: ESA-SCOPE

Role in the project: Partner

Duration: 01/11/2022 – 31/10/2025

Total budget: € 950.000,00

ISMAR budget: € 50.000,00

Web site: n.a.

Key words: Ocean Carbon Cycle, Ocean Carbon Budget, Satellite, Model, BGC-Argo; Atlantic Ocean

Summary:
SCOPE will develop coherent, consistent and integrated budget of pools and fluxes of carbon in the ocean, and further understanding its variability in space and time. This budget will be primarily based on satellite data but also rely on in-situ measurements and models to reduce uncertainties and fill the gaps. First, SCOPE will consolidate the technical specifications of targeted EO products (air-sea exchange and surface DIC; Internal DIC and carbon chemistry; land-sea exchange and coastal carbon; phytoplankton carbon; primary production and export production) and will develop 3-Dimensional products. Then, these new products will be used to estimate the ocean carbon budget and the strength of the different pumps (physical, solubility, biological), to analyse its spatial and temporal variability and its different components as well as the role of biology using BioGeoChemical-Argo floats (BGC-Argo). SCOPE will contribute to the ESA Ocean Science Cluster activities.
