Meda Abate

Beakon ABATE has been installed about 20 nautical miles from the coast, in a body of water with a depth of about 20 m (GPS 45.25 N – 12.77666 E), since March 2000.

The station is owned by the Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente del Veneto (ARPAV) and houses instrumentation from the Tide Forecasting and Reporting Center of the City of Venice and is a site of interest for monitoring long-term biogeochemical variables for the Institute of Marine Sciences.

The beakon is located at a point of interest for monitoring meteorological conditions to support sea state and tidal condition forecasting in the northern Adriatic and the Venice Lagoon.

Meteorological and hydrological data, current measurements, and vertical fluxes are distributed with 10 min temporal resolution. Additional hydrological (CTD) and biogeochemical parameters (dissolved oxygen, inorganic nutrients, pHT, phytoplankton and zooplankton, chlorophyll) are sampled monthly.

The beakon contributes to the European research infrastructure LTER, as part of the Upper Adriatic site.
