Summary:
The project aims to provide a broad and realistic picture of the microbiological hazard associated with exposure to microplastics (MPs) through the consumption of bivalve shellfish. Poor understanding of the hazards associated with MPs pollution has created a dichotomy between assessed and perceived risks. This project will contribute to the advancement of knowledge that may lead toward a scientific consensus regarding the actual risk from exposure to MPs through food and, consequently, the development of effective policies and actions to manage that risk.
The goal of this project is to identify and characterize the microbiological hazard to humans posed by exposure to microplastics (MPs) directly or through consumption of filter-feeding bivalve molluscs. Specific objectives of the project are: i) to understand the composition of the plastisphere; ii) to acquire data related to the resistome (the total content of antibiotic resistance genes-ARGs) associated with MPs circulating in highly anthropized marine environments; iii) to identify factors that shape the composition and development of biofilm on MPs over time; iv) to acquire data related to the magnification of the plastisphere and its resistome through the trophic network; and v) to identify possible biomarkers of MPs contamination in filter-feeding bivalve mollusks.
